DHI and FUE are different hair transplant techniques, and choosing them differs from individual to individual. The choice between them is generally classified by the thinning area of the scalp and the number of donors available. Since a hair transplant is considered a very personal choice- the treatment is chosen according to the patient’s needs. It is important to consult experts delivering a professional hair transplant in India

This article will guide you on which treatment to choose and why it is better for you.

 What exactly is DHI?

It is commonly observed that almost 50 percent of men and more than 50 percent of women experience hair balding or thinning of hair by reaching a specific age. In addition, a noticeable amount of hair loss is seen in them. To counter them, there are several hair treatments like Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE), and Direct hair implantation (DHI).

During FUT hair transplantation, a surgeon generally cuts a part of your hair from your scalp and then extracts individual hair follicles from it. They usually extract it from the back part of your scalp.

In FUE, a surgeon usually extracts follicles from your scalp directly. One common thing  in both surgeries is that the extracted follicles are implanted in the balder areas. Get the most out of professional hair transplant in India.

Direct hair implantation (DHI) is often termed as the modification of the FUE technique in which a surgeon manually cuts the channels of your scalp before implanting any hair follicles in it. DHI is performed through a functional pen-shaped tool that can do both the work simultaneously.

Working procedure of direct hair implantation

DHI is an upgraded version of follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair implantation and follows a similar procedure to the FUE. To initiate the procedure further, your surgeon removes the hair follicles from a healthy part of your scalp. Usually, it happens from the back of your head, where you have stronger roots. After this, they implant it into the balding areas. After successful implantation, these hair follicles will eventually grow new baby hairs.

Here’s what you can probably expect during the procedure:

  1. Your surgeon will gradually shave your head and then will apply local anaesthesia to numb the areas. This ensures that you undergo painless treatment.
  2. The surgeon will then extract hair follicles, generally from the back of your head, with the help of a fine-tip tool to avoid any discomfort to the patient.
  3. The hair follicles are then loaded into a special pen-shaped tool that helps in implanting the follicles into the balding areas of the scalp.
  4. Finally, the surgeon will use an antibiotic cream on the treated area and then apply a bandage to seal all sites.

FUE and DHI surgeries usually take approximately 8 hours to complete in full swing. However, the exact time can alter from person to person, and the number of hair follicles being transplanted. In addition, you require patience to see effective results through this treatment. It will take approximately 12 to 18 months to see visible results.

Difference between DHI and FUE hair transplant

Both DHI and FUE involve the transfer of follicles from an area of your scalp and implant them into the balding parts of your scalp.

In DHI and FUE surgeries, the hair follicles are directly removed from your scalp individually. In addition, DHI allows surgeons to take incisions and then directly implant the hair at the same time. However, DHI takes a longer time to fulfil the entire process and is a bit expensive.

Who can undergo the DHI procedure?

DHI is generally required by people who have androgenic alopecia, which is one of the most common hair loss among people. In common terms, it is also known as male or female pattern hair loss. There are certain characteristic features that enable a candidate for hair transplantation. Some of them are listed below:

  • Age– People undergoing hair implantation should be above the age of 25. Since hair loss before this age is almost unpredictable.
  • Hair diameter– It is commonly observed that people with thicker hair always achieve enhanced results than people with thinner hair, as thicker hair gives more coverage.
  • Donor hair density– This is a primary factor to be considered while undergoing a hair transplant. Usually, patients with a hair density of fewer than forty follicles are advised to undergo a hair transplant.

Side effects of DHI hair transplant

Although hair transplantation surgeries are relatively safe and seldom cause complications or infections, DHI is less harmful as it does not require cutting a large strip of your skin. This makes it less prone to infection and internal damage. However, some patients may undergo certain side effects like shock hair loss, undesired hair appearance, infection, and negative reactions to anaesthesia.

Summing it up

DHI is an advanced version of the FUE implantation method and has the potential to treat pattern baldness. By now, you must have gathered useful insights about the effectiveness of DHI.
