As a couple, you visit a fertility or IVF clinic in Delhi or your local town/city when you notice your effort to conceive a child does not bear fruit. And the specialist at that fertility clinic/hospital advises fertility treatments such as IVF to you to facilitate you in your parenthood journey.

IVF or in vitro fertilisation is an effective medical intervention to help couples treat or bypass their fertility problems and become parents of healthy and cute children. It takes time and includes several procedures. Comprehending all procedures will help you go through them well and get maximum positive outcomes. Here is a step-by-step guide to IVF treatment:

Step 1 – Fertility consultation

It is your first meeting with a fertility expert. During the meeting, you have face-to-face interaction with the expert, need to produce your medical history, disclose your lifestyle choices, and have physical examinations. Further, you will receive a treatment protocol to address your infertility.

Step 2 – Ovary stimulation

As a female partner, you need to visit the clinic on day 2 or 3 of your menstrual cycle. During this visit, an expert will investigate your hormones and perform an ultrasound. Your doctor will ask you to take injectable hormones to promote the development of follicles that contain eggs. The ovary stimulation process generally lasts for one to two weeks. Your doctor relies on transvaginal ultrasound to know the response of your ovaries.

Step 3 – Egg retrieval

After the administration of medicines/ovary stimulators, the doctor administers the final injection for the maturation of eggs and loosening the egg from the follicular wall. As a female partner, you need to visit the clinic for egg retrieval after 34-36 hours of the final hormonal injection. The process of egg retrieval takes only 20-30 minutes. Your doctor will insert a catheter with a container into your vagina and go to the ovaries as per the transvaginal ultrasound scan direction.

Step 4 – Sperm collection

On the day of egg retrieval, you (the male partner) need to produce a fresh semen sample. You can do it by taking your semen in a container from your home or masturbating in a private room at the clinic. Your doctor can advise TESA (testicular sperm aspiration) as per your semen analysis

Step 5 – Egg fertilisation/embryo development

After egg retrieval and sperm collection, the expert places eggs and sperm together in the lab disc. The expert monitors the development process for 2 weeks.

Step 6 – Embryo transfer

After the evaluation in the laboratory, the expert selects healthy embryos for transfer. Your doctor will suggest the best day for embryo transfer. And for embryo transfer, the doctor will use the catheter and ultrasound.

Step 7 – Pregnancy confirmation

Your doctor will advise you to take the prescribed supportive medicines and rest for 3 days. After two weeks, your doctor will ask you to have a pregnancy test at your home or a pathology lab. You might need to take it again if your pregnancy test report is negative.

ConclusionIVF is a long fertility treatment process. It includes fertility consultation, ovary stimulation, egg retrieval, sperm extraction, egg fertilisation, embryo transfer, and a pregnancy test. Having an idea about all these steps will facilitate you in your IVF treatment and parenthood journey.
