Denny Hamlin ended a 33-race drought by securing a much-needed victory in Sunday’s AdventHealth 400 NASCAR Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway. The win didn’t come without controversy, as Hamlin’s move to pass Kyle Larson on the final lap left some fans displeased. Intense restart

The race featured an intense chase that began with a restart on Lap 221 of 267. Hamlin closed in on Larson’s Chevrolet and further loosened an already loose race car with slight contact from the right front of his Toyota. This move turned Larson into the outside wall, allowing Hamlin to streak past and take the checkered flag. Larson recovered and finished second, 1.307 seconds behind the winner.

The victory marked Hamlin’s fourth at Kansas and his 49th career win, tying him with Tony Stewart for 15th most all-time. It also marked the 400th win for Joe Gibbs Racing, including 203 in the NASCAR Cup Series and 197 in the Xfinity Series.

The race was filled with excitement, with 37 lead changes among 12 drivers – the most lead changes in NASCAR history for a 400-mile race on a 1.5-mile intermediate speedway. Larson led seven times for a race-high 85 laps, including a stretch of 46 straight, before Hamlin ultimately clinched the win on Lap 267.

Drama between Chastain and Gragson

The race also saw some drama between Ross Chastain and Noah Gragson, who exchanged sheet metal during the race and later engaged in a brief physical altercation before being restrained. Both drivers managed to finish the race, with Chastain in fifth place and Gragson outside the top 10.

William Byron, who started the race from pole position, managed to secure third place after recovering from a speeding penalty that put him two laps down. Bubba Wallace passed Chastain with 15 laps remaining to finish fourth, while Joey Logano, Chase Elliott, Martin Truex Jr., Tyler Reddick, and Austin Dillon completed the top 10.

Larson’s ability to contend for the win, despite the early setback caused by contact with Reddick, showcased his immense talent. His impressive recovery allowed him to reassume the lead during the second stage. Hamlin’s crew chief, Chris Gabehart, recognized the significance of the win, stating, “Denny Hamlin just beat the most talented race car driver in the world. What does that say?”

Accidents in Stage 2

The race saw its fair share of wrecks, with consecutive accidents late in Stage 2, altering the running order and ultimately handing the stage win to Logano. Bell’s wreck on the backstretch on Lap 159 caused the sixth caution, after which he admitted to getting “a little too aggressive on the side-draft.”

The NASCAR Cup Series will move on to the Goodyear 400, scheduled for Sunday at Darlington Raceway (3 p.m. ET, FS1, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). This race will be part of NASCAR’s Official Throwback Weekend, featuring all three national series.
