PONTEVEDRA, Spain – The United States U23 Greco-Roman World Team has received its draws for the 2022 U23 World Championships, which begin on Monday.
Two-time Senior World Team member Cohlton Schultz at 130 kg opens against Jonavan Smith of Puerto Rico, who has no international achievements. He is a resident of California, who attended Cerritos College.
This is Schultz’s seventh age-group World Championships, and he boasts three medals, a U17 World title in 2017, a U20 World silver medal in 2019 and a U20 World bronze in 2018.
Two more past Senior World Team members have received their draw, 2022 Senior World Team member Benji Peak at 72 kg and 2021 Senior World Team member Peyton Omania at 67 kg
On Monday, October 17, the 2022 U23 World Championships will commence in Pontevedra, Spain. As has been reported, the US roster is sufficiently strong thanks in large part to the presence of three recent Senior World Team members and three others who have attained National Team recognition. This is of course nothing new for the US program. Each year since the advent of the U23 Worlds, the United States has went into battle with formidable entrants in nearly every weight division. Success (aka medals) has thus far eluded Team USA on the U23 front in spite of the considerable talent available within this age range. But this year’s group boasts more overall experience compared to past American U23 rosters pertaining to high-profile domestic concerns and international time-on-target.
