The declaration of income makes it possible to know whether the tax deducted at source corresponds to the amount of tax due. Depending on the amounts declared, some taxpayers may benefit from a refund, others must pay a balance of income tax. Explanations.

Refund or balance to pay: the 2022 calendar

In 2022, if you are eligible for an income tax refund, it occurred on July 21 or August 2 .

On the other hand, if you have to pay a balance of income tax, this will be:

  • withdrawn in one go on September 26 for an amount less than or equal to €300
  • withdrawn in four monthly installments starting September 26 , if the balance for which you are liable is greater than €300 .

What does income tax regularization mean?

Since January 1 , 2019, income tax is deducted at source (withholding at source, deposit). A regularization of the payment of tax is carried out the following year, following the declaration of income in the spring. Thus, the income tax return you made in the spring of 2022 allows you to take stock of your tax situation and calculate the final amount of tax due on your 2021 income.

If your calculated tax is equal to the sums already deducted at source in 2021, your situation is in balance and you have no action to take .

Conversely, if the amount of tax calculated is lower or higher than the sums already deducted at source in 2021, two scenarios may then arise:

  • you get a refund of the overpayment by the tax authorities,
  • you have an amount to pay (or balance to pay) , to supplement what you have already paid.

income tax refund

You are eligible for a refund: this is the case if the amount deducted as part of the withholding tax in 2021 is greater than the final amount of your tax or if you are entitled to a refund of tax reductions or credits . The details of the calculation of your tax are indicated on your tax notice. This refund was made by transfer to your bank account, in most cases, either July 21 or August 2, 2022 .

The supplement or balance of the income tax to be paid

You have an amount to pay as income tax balance: this is the case if, for example, the amounts of withholding taxes that you paid in 2021 are insufficient because you have not updated your withholding tax rate , or if you have benefited from an advance of reductions or tax credits in January 2022.

In this case, the amount to be paid will be directly debited from your bank account from September 26, 2022 , in one installment if it is less than or equal to €300 , or in four installments if it is greater than €300. .

What are the steps to benefit from the refund or pay your income tax balance?

If you benefit from a reimbursement, this has been paid directly to the known bank account of the DGFiP, if you have communicated one, otherwise, you will be reimbursed by a check sent to your home address to be cashed at your establishment. banking.

If you have an amount of tax to pay, it will be deducted from the bank account that you communicated to the DGFiP.
