Basic Horse Tack Items to Start Horseback Riding

Read Time:2 Minute, 30 Second

Riding is one of the fun activities you can do with your horse. It serves as an exercise for them and a great boding for both of you as well. Whether you opt for a leisurely ride or enter into competitions, riding surely strengthens the bond between the owner and the horse.

Before you can ride your horse, it is important to gear up first. Tack refers to the equipment that you and your horses need during a ride. It makes riding easier and convenient for the rider and comfortable for them as well. For starters, here is the must-have tack for riding.

Saddle

The saddle is where the rider sits during a ride. It helps you maintain better balance on the horse and gives you something to hold onto when riding. There are different types of saddles depending on the type of ride you’re going to do.

No matter what type it is, be sure to choose a saddle that fits your horse perfectly to prevent injuries and discomfort to your horse. If you have a younger horse or pony, opt for pony saddles instead since a regular horse saddle would be too big and restrictive for them.

Halter, Bridle, Bit, and Reins

These four parts are the gears that are worn around the horse’s head. These parts work together to guide the direction of this. These parts are connected to the lead rope to allow the rider to guide where the horse is going during a ride.

Breast Collar

The breast collar or breastplate is worn across the horse’s chest and is connected to the saddle. The main purpose of a breastplate is to keep the harness or saddle from falling or sliding back. This tack is really essential, especially on events that require your horse to jump. If you love exploring new areas while riding your horse, you might need this since you wouldn’t know if there are some spots that your horse needs to jump over during the ride.

Girth

The girth is an essential accessory to the saddle. It is made from leather or cotton strap which is connected to both ends of the saddle. It is worn across the horse’s stomach and holds the saddle in place during the ride. Be sure to pick a saddle that has a good fit to prevent rubbing and skin injuries to your horse.

Stirrup

The stirrup is equipment attached to the saddle’s ends and is usually made from metal, wood, or any other material. This is where the rider places his or her feet during the ride. It also gives support to the feet when the rider is mounting them.

Horse Blanket

A blanket or saddle pad is placed under the saddle to protect the horseback from rubbing into the saddle which can cause skin irritation and injury.

With all those essential tacks, you can surely have a safe and more enjoyable ride with your equine friend.
